A consignment shop can be a fantastic way to get a great deal on a used wedding dress. Of course you have to be okay with the fact that someone else has worn it before you! There are even some consignment shops that specialize in used wedding dresses and apparel. The best part about this bargain hunting strategy is that you get to take home the dress the same day, not to mention the hundreds of dollars in savings over buying a brand new dress from a boutique. You will need to be vigilant and have some patience when looking for a wedding dress at consignment shops. It’s not every day that people will come in with a wedding gown.

Another great way to score a deal on a dress is to check the local classified ads. Although it’s sad, many brides who have had their weddings called off put their dresses up for sale in the classifieds. These dresses have only been tried on once or twice and are basically unused. Craigslist is also a great place to check online.

The only downside to purchasing a used wedding gown is that it will likely need some alterations done to it. Bridal shops usually don’t do alterations on dresses that weren’t purchased at their store. You will need to find a local seamstress to make the alterations for you. Keep in mind that talented seamstresses are tough to find and may be quite pricey. You’ll need to factor in how much you saved on the dress and how much the alterations will cost when deciding to purchase a used dress.
